This is Tafel 11 from Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur, made between 1899 and 1904. It is a chromolithograph, a colour print produced from stone, and it shows discoidal radiolarians, known as Discoidea. The plate carries its printed header and caption text, which gives it the look of a page from a natural history publication. Haeckel was a zoologist and marine biologist as well as an artist, and the plate reflects both sides of that work: careful observation of tiny organisms, arranged with an eye for pattern and form.
On your wall: Its fine, symmetrical natural forms suit a study, a reading corner or a hallway, and sit well alongside other botanical and natural history pictures.

Ernst Haeckel was a German zoologist, naturalist, physician and professor who also worked as an artist. He described and named thousands of new species, drew a family tree linking all living things, and coined terms such as ecology and phylum. He helped introduce Charles Darwin's ideas to Germany.
