About this artwork

This hand-coloured lithograph shows two kestrels on a branch, one of them holding a mouse. The caption names the bird as the kestrel, Falco tinnunculus, and the plate is signed by E. Lear. It comes from the first volume of John Gould's The Birds of Europe, which covers the birds of prey. The work was issued in parts between 1832 and 1837 and printed in London by R. and J.E. Taylor, with Gould publishing it himself. The plate sits within a wider series of bird illustrations, and the pairing of the two birds with their catch gives it a quiet sense of life in the wild.

On your wall: Its natural subject and the branch setting suit a study, hallway or sitting room, especially where other botanical or ornithological prints are already displayed.

About John Gould

John Gould was an English ornithologist who published monographs on birds, with plates by his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and artists including Edward Lear, Joseph Wolf and William Matthew Hart. His seven-volume Birds of Australia, from the 1840s, led many to regard him as the father of Australian bird study. He also identified the birds now called Darwin's finches.
