This is Plate 55 from Maria Sibylla Merian's Metamorphosis insectorum surinamensium, published in 1705. The book presents the caterpillars and worms of Suriname, together with the changes they go through, drawn from life. Each creature is placed on the plants, flowers and fruits where it was found, so the botanical subject matters as much as the insect. The full title also promises frogs, toads, lizards, snakes, spiders and ants, all painted and described in America at life size. Merian was an entomologist and naturalist who recorded insects by direct observation, and her work showed that insects pass through a life cycle rather than arising spontaneously.
On your wall: Its botanical and natural-history subject suits a study, dining room, hallway or reading corner, especially in homes that favour naturalistic, quietly detailed pictures.
