About this artwork

This is Plate XLVIII from Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium, published in 1705. It is an illuminated copper engraving, meaning the printed lines were coloured by hand. The book is the work of Maria Sibylla Merian, a German-Dutch naturalist and scientific illustrator. She was among the earliest European naturalists to record insects through direct observation, and her work showed that insects pass through a life cycle rather than appearing by spontaneous generation. The title of the book points to her interest in insect transformation, and plates like this one belong to that larger study. Merian also came from the Frankfurt branch of the Swiss Merian family.

On your wall: Its botanical and natural-history character suits a study, a reading corner, a dining room or a hallway, especially where a considered, classic look is wanted.
