About this artwork

This plate comes from Merian's Metamorphosis insectorum surinamensium, published in 1705. The book presents the caterpillars and worms of Suriname together with the changes they go through, each shown on the plants, flowers and fruits where it was found. Its full title also promises frogs, toads, lizards, snakes, spiders and ants, all drawn from life and at life size in America. Merian was a naturalist who observed insects directly, and her work showed that they follow a life cycle rather than appearing by spontaneous generation. Plate 34 belongs to this careful study of living things and the plants they depend on.

On your wall: Suits a study, dining room, hallway or reading corner, where its botanical subject will sit comfortably beside books, wood and natural materials.
