This plate comes from the Supplement to John Gould's A Monograph of the Trochilidae, dated 1880. It shows a hummingbird, identified as Calliphlox evelynae, a species once also known under the name Doricha lyrura. The plate is linked to William Matthew Hart, one of the artists who worked with Gould on his bird publications. Gould was an English ornithologist who published a series of monographs on birds, and this work belongs to that body of study. It suits anyone who enjoys careful natural history illustration.

John Gould was an English ornithologist who published monographs on birds, with plates by his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and artists including Edward Lear, Joseph Wolf and William Matthew Hart. His seven-volume Birds of Australia, from the 1840s, led many to regard him as the father of Australian bird study. He also identified the birds now called Darwin's finches.
