This plate by John Gould dates from 1850 and belongs to the first volume of The Birds of Asia. It is catalogued as an illustration of Harpactes kasumba, a species of trogon, and the bird is the clear subject of the sheet. Gould was an English ornithologist who published monographs on birds, with plates produced by his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and a number of other artists. He is also remembered for his work on Australian birds, and for identifying the birds now nicknamed Darwin's finches, which fed into Darwin's thinking.
On your wall: It would sit well in a study, hallway or sitting room where a quiet natural history print is wanted, particularly alongside botanical pieces.

John Gould was an English ornithologist who published monographs on birds, with plates by his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and artists including Edward Lear, Joseph Wolf and William Matthew Hart. His seven-volume Birds of Australia, from the 1840s, led many to regard him as the father of Australian bird study. He also identified the birds now called Darwin's finches.
