About this artwork

Simon Verelst painted this still life in oil on wood around 1669, using only a handful of flowers. A large rose, a red anemone and a white narcissus tinged with pink fill a simple glass flask, with smaller blossoms scattered around them. As many still-life painters did, he included a window reflected in the glass, though he left its structure loosely suggested. A few chips in the stone surface make the ledge feel almost tangible. Verelst moved early in his career from Holland to London, where he worked for the court of King James II and was warmly praised for the realism of his flower paintings.

On your wall: Its focused arrangement of a rose, anemone and narcissus suits a dining room, hallway, study or quiet corner of a living room where a calm floral picture is welcome.
