Unknown artist, 1750
A whole bouquet rises from a single stem, as if flowers had simply grown into their arrangement. It is a quietly magical Rajasthani painting from around 1750.

Flower arrangements in the European manner became a favourite subject in Indian miniature painting under the Mughal emperor Jahangir, who reigned from 1605 to 1627. Artists took inspiration from imported prints and reinterpreted them in Mughal style. This painting was made at a Rajasthani court in the Rajput kingdom of Bundi, in north-western India, around 1750. The artist worked in gum tempera on paper. The bouquet appears to grow out of the ground from one stem, a charming touch that turns a formal arrangement into something almost enchanted.
On your wall: It suits calm, considered spaces such as a living room, study or hallway, especially where a floral subject with a touch of fantasy would be welcome.
