Ferdinand Bauer painted this still life of passionflowers in 1812, in oil on panel. Blooms in red, blue-white and yellow are set out on a stone ledge, together with leaves, curling tendrils and a few buds. One orange butterfly adds a small, bright accent to the arrangement. Bauer was an Austrian botanical illustrator who travelled on Matthew Flinders' expedition to Australia, and this painting is now in the Art Gallery of South Australia.
On your wall: Its rich reds, yellows and soft blue-whites suit a dining room, hallway or study, and sit well in a home that enjoys botanical subjects.
