This botanical plate shows two plants of Caleana major, the flying duck orchid, in watercolour on cream paper. Alongside the whole plants, with their roots and tubers, are enlarged details of the dissected flower. Ferdinand Bauer based the painting on a drawing he made from material collected at Sydney in September 1803. It first appeared as Plate 8 in Stephan Endlicher's Iconographia, published in 1838. Bauer was an Austrian botanical illustrator who had travelled to Australia on Matthew Flinders' expedition.
On your wall: Its cream ground and fine botanical drawing suit a study, hallway, reading corner or quiet bedroom, particularly where natural, understated decoration is preferred.
