About this artwork

Redouté's 1824 print shows a stem of Rosa gallica with two open blooms, one crimson and one deep purple, alongside several buds. A caption names it Rosa Gallica (Purpuro-violacea magna) and gives the French name Rosier Évêque. It is a coloured stipple engraving, a technique in which an image is built from tiny dots, and it belongs to Redouté's Les Roses. Redouté was a painter and botanist from the Austrian Netherlands, known for his flower watercolours, many of which were published as large coloured engravings.

On your wall: The deep crimson and purple tones would suit a dining room, study, hallway or bedroom, particularly where you want a quiet botanical note in a traditional or calmly modern setting.
