This is Ernst Haeckel's study of Doto coronata, a type of nudibranch, or sea slug. It appears as one of the illustrations in his Kunstformen der Natur, where plate 43 is devoted to the Nudibranchia. Haeckel was a zoologist and marine biologist as well as an artist, and he described and named thousands of species during his career. Here that scientific curiosity and his skill as an illustrator come together in a single image of a small sea creature, shown for close and patient looking.
