This 1874 plate by John Gould shows a parakeet, identified as Psittacula longicauda, the long-tailed parakeet. It comes from The Birds of Asia, Volume 6, one of the bird monographs Gould published during his career. Gould was an English ornithologist whose books were illustrated with plates by a number of artists. Here the bird is the focus, presented as a clear natural history study that invites a closer look at its shape and feathering.
On your wall: It suits studies, living rooms and hallways, and sits well in spaces that favour natural history, botanical prints or a calm, considered gallery wall.

John Gould was an English ornithologist who published monographs on birds, with plates by his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and artists including Edward Lear, Joseph Wolf and William Matthew Hart. His seven-volume Birds of Australia, from the 1840s, led many to regard him as the father of Australian bird study. He also identified the birds now called Darwin's finches.
