Ferdinand Bauer painted this study of Banksia sessilis, a plant once classed as Dryandra. It is a botanical watercolour of a branch with spiky leaves and yellow flower heads. Along the bottom, the flower's parts are shown dissected, together with a fruit, so the plant is seen both whole and in detail. Bauer worked from his own drawing of material collected at King George Sound, New Holland, in December 1801. He was an Austrian botanical illustrator who travelled on Matthew Flinders' expedition to Australia.
On your wall: Its yellow blooms and careful botanical detail suit a study, hallway, kitchen or sitting room, especially where natural, understated decor is wanted.
