Odilon Redon made this pastel on cardboard between 1905 and 1909. It shows a woman in profile beside a window, a simple, contemplative subject. Redon was a French Symbolist draughtsman, printmaker and painter, and pastel was a medium well suited to the soft, hazy handling of colour seen here. The work is now in the Pushkin Museum.
On your wall: It suits calm, personal spaces such as a bedroom, reading corner or hallway, where a quiet figure at a window can be enjoyed up close.

Odilon Redon was a French artist who worked as a draughtsman, printmaker and painter. He belonged to the Symbolist movement, which favoured imagination and suggestion over straightforward description. Moving between drawing, printmaking and painting, he built a body of work that sits comfortably within that tradition and rewards slow, attentive looking.
