Odilon Redon, 1905
Redon's flowers seem to glow from within, a bouquet painted as though remembered from a dream rather than simply observed.

This is a flower still life in oil, painted around 1905 by Odilon Redon, a French artist working in the Symbolist spirit. Pictures like it filled the last fifteen years or so of his career and brought him his greatest commercial success. His fascination with plants began in childhood. He grew up in a family of wine producers near Bordeaux, where weather, light and temperature shaped each harvest. At twenty he met the botanist and draughtsman Armond Clavaud, whose carefully observed drawings of regional flowers fired his imagination. Redon wanted to paint nature as it appears in a dream.
On your wall: A vase of flowers like this suits living rooms, dining areas and quiet corners of a bedroom or hallway where a touch of botanical colour is welcome.

Odilon Redon was a French artist who worked as a draughtsman, printmaker and painter. He belonged to the Symbolist movement, which favoured imagination and suggestion over straightforward description. Moving between drawing, printmaking and painting, he built a body of work that sits comfortably within that tradition and rewards slow, attentive looking.
