This plate shows Alpinia zerumbet, a plant that Thornton presented under the name Renealmia nutans. It appears in The Temple of Flora, which dates from 1812 and belongs to the tradition of botanical illustration. Thornton was an English physician and botanical writer, and his interest in plants ran through much of his published work. Here the plant itself is the subject, offered to the viewer for close and unhurried looking.

Robert John Thornton (1768–1837) was an English physician who also wrote on botany. He is remembered for A New Illustration of the Sexual System of Carolus Von Linnæus, published between 1797 and 1807, and for The British Flora, which appeared in 1812. His plant subjects reflect his dual interest in medicine and botany.
