About this artwork

In Flower Clouds, Odilon Redon places a sailboat with two figures, perhaps saintly women, on a timeless journey through a luminous, fantastical sea and sky. It is made in pastel, with touches of stumping, incising and brushwork, on blue-gray paper. Redon had worked for years almost entirely in black and white before discovering colour through pastel, and this work belongs to a group with spiritual overtones. The boat may be read as a picture of his own inner voyage, bringing a more hopeful mood than the troubled darkness of his earlier black works.

On your wall: Its glowing, dreamlike colour and gentle, contemplative subject suit a quiet bedroom, a reading corner or a calm living space where a touch of imagination is welcome.

About Odilon Redon

Odilon Redon was a French artist who worked as a draughtsman, printmaker and painter. He belonged to the Symbolist movement, which favoured imagination and suggestion over straightforward description. Moving between drawing, printmaking and painting, he built a body of work that sits comfortably within that tradition and rewards slow, attentive looking.
