Painted in 1909, this mythological work by Odilon Redon shows Apollo and his chariot, a subject from classical legend. Redon made it with oil paint and pastel on cardboard, combining two media that he is known to have used across his career as a painter and draughtsman. The work is held at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux. Redon was a French Symbolist, and here he turns to a well-loved figure of myth.
On your wall: A mythological subject in oil and pastel, it suits a living room, study or reading corner where you would like a touch of classical storytelling.

Odilon Redon was a French artist who worked as a draughtsman, printmaker and painter. He belonged to the Symbolist movement, which favoured imagination and suggestion over straightforward description. Moving between drawing, printmaking and painting, he built a body of work that sits comfortably within that tradition and rewards slow, attentive looking.
