About this artwork

John Gould's 1849 plate shows two green hummingbirds with chestnut underparts perched on a leafy branch. Below them sit a grassy tuft and fern fronds, which give the composition a soft, layered feel. It is a hand-coloured lithograph, and the plate belongs to Gould's A Monograph of the Trochilidae, in its third volume. The title names the species as Lampornis castaneoventris, and the work is credited to Gould with Richter's name in the title. Gould was an English ornithologist who published many bird monographs, working with a number of illustrators.

On your wall: The soft greens and warm chestnut tones suit a study, hallway, bedroom or sitting room, particularly where natural, botanical touches are already part of the scheme.

About John Gould

John Gould was an English ornithologist who published monographs on birds, with plates by his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and artists including Edward Lear, Joseph Wolf and William Matthew Hart. His seven-volume Birds of Australia, from the 1840s, led many to regard him as the father of Australian bird study. He also identified the birds now called Darwin's finches.
