This is Plate 79 from Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur, titled 'Lacertilia – Eidechsen'. It is a colour lithograph gathering a variety of lizards on a single page, among them the frilled lizard, the chameleon, the basilisk and the thorny devil. Each animal is arranged so that its form, texture and markings can be compared with the others. Haeckel was a German zoologist and artist who named thousands of species, and his plates bring that scientific eye together with a strong sense of design. The work dates from 1899–1904.
On your wall: Its natural subject and detailed illustration suit a study, a library, a hallway or a living room where botanical and natural history prints are gathered together.
