About this artwork

Trochilidae is plate 99 of Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur, dated 1904. It brings together twelve hummingbirds on a single sheet, mostly males, among them the Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Crimson Topaz, Red-tailed Comet, Tufted Coquette and the Sword-billed Hummingbird. The Buff-tailed Sicklebill and the Booted Racket-tail are there too, and one female, a Juan Fernández Firecrown, joins them. Haeckel drew the birds from millinery specimens, so their poses are not how they would hold themselves in life. Seen as a study of form, the plate invites you to compare bills, crests and tail feathers side by side.
