About this artwork

This plate by Ernst Haeckel, dated 1904, is a study of Pennatulida, the group commonly called sea pens. It brings together several species, among them Umbellula encrinus, Renilla reniformis and various Virgularia and Stylatula. Some views show a whole mature colony, others only a branch or section with its polyps, and the Renilla reniformis is followed from the first founder polyp to a young colony. The plate belongs to Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur. Although these are marine animals, the stems, branches and clustered polyps give them the look of plants, which is why the image sits so comfortably alongside botanical work.

On your wall: Its plant-like forms and scientific character suit a study, a hallway or a reading corner, and sit well with botanical prints or natural wood furnishings.
