Actiniae is a colour lithograph by Ernst Haeckel, dated 1904. It shows many sea anemones of varied forms, their tentacles opening out like petals against a rocky underwater setting. The plate is number 49 in Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur, a series of natural history illustrations. Haeckel was a German zoologist and marine biologist as well as an artist, and the plate reflects that combination of close observation and decorative arrangement. The flower-like shapes of the anemones give the scene a botanical feel, even though the subject is marine life.
On your wall: Its flower-like forms and underwater colours suit a study, a sitting room or a bathroom, particularly where natural history or botanical prints are already on display.
