Batrachia is plate 68 of Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur, dated 1904. The plate brings together a variety of frogs and tree frogs, among them a Mediterranean tree frog, a spotted Rhacophorus and a Breviceps from Mozambique. The first figure is the pouch frog of Venezuela, which is unusual because the female has a paired pouch on her back. The eggs stay there until the tadpoles hatch, and a narrow triangular opening at the rear of the back, set in a pale saddle-shaped patch, leads into it. Each species is named, so the plate reads as both a study and a gathering of very different amphibians.
On your wall: It suits a study, hallway or reading corner, and sits well with other natural history pictures or in a room that favours a quiet, observant mood.
