About this artwork

This is plate 66 of Kunstformen der Natur, titled Arachnida. It brings together a range of arachnids on a single sheet, among them orb-weaver spiders such as Gasteracantha cancriformis and Micrathena furcata, several mites including Cepheus latus, and a tailless whipscorpion. Haeckel was a zoologist as well as an artist, and the plate reflects both sides of that work: each animal is identified by species, and each is shown as a distinct and carefully observed shape. Seen together, the spiny, rounded and angular bodies make an unexpectedly decorative study of natural form.

On your wall: Suits a study, library or hallway, where its detailed natural-history subject invites a closer look, and it sits well beside other botanical or scientific prints.
