Muscinae is a botanical plate by Ernst Haeckel from 1904, part of his Kunstformen der Natur series. It brings together a range of mosses on one page, among them Polytrichum commune, Sphagnum palustre, Splachnum luteum and Rhodobryum roseum. Several of the species have a different name today, and the plate also shows moss sporangia, the small spore-bearing capsules that rise from the plants. Seen together, the varied forms invite a slow, close look at plants that are easy to pass by.
On your wall: Well suited to a study, hallway or reading corner, and to any room where a quiet botanical subject sits comfortably alongside natural materials and plants.
