About this artwork

This six-panel folding screen is painted in ink and colour on paper. Read from right to left, flowering plants in the near distance mark the passing of the seasons. Birds, often in pairs, go about their activities among them, giving the scene a natural, peaceful air. Beyond lies a broad stretch of water, and distant mountains rise as a backdrop. Although the screen carries Sesshū's name, it was painted by a skilled follower working in the mid-sixteenth century. The name points to the master's link with colourful bird-and-flower paintings from Ming China, a theme he is thought to have introduced to Japanese painting. Notably, no birds of prey appear.

On your wall: Its gentle seasonal flowers and calm landscape suit living rooms, bedrooms and quiet studies, particularly where a restful, nature-inspired atmosphere is wanted.

About Sesshū Tōyō

Sesshū Tōyō was a Japanese Zen monk and painter, regarded as a great master of ink painting. Chinese landscapes first inspired him, yet his work developed a distinctly Japanese character that reflects Zen Buddhist aesthetics. He painted landscapes, portraits, birds and flowers, often using flattened perspective and strong, emphatic lines.
