Mir 'Ali Haravi, 1500
A page of elegant Persian calligraphy, surrounded by flowering vines, pairs of birds and resting deer.
No VAT charged. Free delivery in Switzerland from CHF 99. Delivery details
The central panel carries Persian calligraphy, finished by a Persian master and embellished with gold and floral arabesques. About a hundred years later, the small page was mounted into an album for the Mughal emperor of India. Mughal artists then filled the outer border with floral vines in bloom and bud, with pairs of birds perched among them and male and female deer resting as they listen to the birdsong. The poem at the centre, by Ibn-i Yamin, encourages the reader not to worry about unexpected calamities. The border favours nature's abundance, while the calligraphy reflects Persian refinement. It is made with gum tempera, gold and ink on paper.
On your wall: Its flowers, birds and gold detail suit a study, reading nook, hallway or quiet corner of a living room where there is time to look closely.
