This is the second leaf of an album of miscellaneous subjects by Fan Qi, painted in ink and colour on silk in the early 1650s, during the Qing dynasty. The scene may draw on a line by the poet Du Mu, in which a herdboy points towards a distant Apricot Village. Facing the painting is a calligraphic inscription by Han Tan. It describes red cliffs like a carved furong flower, a long bridge joining neighbouring ridges, a wine shop among bamboo, and a man made merry by good wine on the eastern bank of a stream.
On your wall: Its blend of landscape and blossom imagery suits a study, reading corner or quiet hallway, particularly in calm interiors that welcome a thoughtful, poetic touch.
