About this artwork

This leaf comes from a double album of twenty paintings by Chen Hongshou, which takes in landscapes, figures and flowers. It is painted in ink and colour on silk, and the title points to lotus and rocks as its subjects. Albums from this later part of his career are often small in scale, in the spirit of little Chinese gardens or carefully chosen table rocks used for contemplation. Chen's work from these years combines a refined, archaistic manner with a quirky character, and avoids sentimentality.

On your wall: Its gentle botanical subject of lotus and rocks suits calm spaces such as a study, a reading corner, a bedroom or a quiet hallway.

About Chen Hongshou

Chen Hongshou was a Chinese painter who worked in the late Ming dynasty. His name was once commonly romanised as Ch'en Hung-shou, so you may come across it spelled that way in older writing. Amelia is pleased to offer his work to anyone who enjoys the painting traditions of Ming-era China.
