This leaf comes from a double album of twenty paintings by Chen Hongshou, a late Ming painter. The album ranges across landscapes, figures and flowers, and this page takes a lohan as its subject, following a work by Guanxiu. It is painted in ink and colour on silk. Chen's late albums are known for a refined, deliberately old-fashioned style that avoids shallowness and sentimentality. His figures and landscapes there are kept small, in the spirit of miniature gardens and the little rocks or old roots that scholars kept for contemplation.
On your wall: Its quiet, contemplative character suits a study, a reading corner or a calm bedroom, where it can be looked at closely and slowly.

Chen Hongshou was a Chinese painter who worked in the late Ming dynasty. His name was once commonly romanised as Ch'en Hung-shou, so you may come across it spelled that way in older writing. Amelia is pleased to offer his work to anyone who enjoys the painting traditions of Ming-era China.
