Pancrace Bessa, 1819
Lobed leaves, blue fruits on bright red stalks and small flowering sprigs: a sassafras plate drawn with careful, delicate detail.
No VAT charged. Free delivery in Switzerland from CHF 99. Delivery details
This hand-coloured engraved plate, numbered 81, shows sassafras in close detail. Lobed leaves spread across the sheet, while blue fruits hang from vivid red stalks and small sprigs of flowers sit alongside. The drawing is signed by Bessa, with Gabriel named as the engraver. Pancrace Bessa was a French natural history artist known for his botanical illustrations, and the fine, delicate handling of the plant here suits that reputation. The contrast of blue and red against the green foliage gives the plate a quiet but distinct character.
On your wall: Its green foliage with touches of blue and red suits a study, hallway, kitchen or sitting room, especially where a calm, natural note is wanted.
