About this artwork

This botanical plate shows a branch of the cork oak, Quercus suber, with its leaves and a pair of acorns. It is an engraving that has been coloured by hand, and the plate is numbered 13. The caption names the tree in both English and Latin, and the plate carries the marks of its makers: Bessa as the draughtsman and Gabriel as the engraver. Pancrace Bessa was a French natural history artist known for his botanical illustrations, and the clear outlines and delicate handling of the leaves reflect that training. It is a quiet, precise study of one branch.

On your wall: Its natural greens and the calm, uncluttered subject suit studies, hallways, kitchens and bedrooms, especially where botanical or traditional décor is already at home.
