This is Plate 9 from Maria Sibylla Merian's Metamorphosis insectorum surinamensium, published in 1705. The book presents caterpillars and worms of Suriname together with their transformations, each shown on the plants, flowers and fruits where it was found. The full title also promises frogs, toads, lizards, snakes, spiders and ants, all drawn from life and at life size in America. Merian was a naturalist and scientific illustrator who observed insects directly, and her work showed that they pass through a life cycle rather than appearing by spontaneous generation. Her plates bring botany and natural history together in a single image.
On your wall: Well suited to studies, reading corners, dining rooms and hallways, especially where a botanical or natural history theme is already part of the decor.
