This plate comes from The Birds of Europe, John Gould's survey of the continent's birds, and appears in its fifth volume, which covers the swimming and water birds. The work was issued in parts between 1832 and 1837, printed in London by R. and J.E. Taylor and published by Gould himself. The title tells us the subject is the Solan Gannet, a seabird. Gould was an English ornithologist who produced bird monographs with plates by his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and a number of other artists. Here, the focus is on a single species, presented with the clarity that suits a natural history study.
On your wall: Its subject and understated natural history character suit studies, hallways, cottage-style living rooms and bedrooms, especially alongside botanical prints or soft, muted colours.

John Gould was an English ornithologist who published monographs on birds, with plates by his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and artists including Edward Lear, Joseph Wolf and William Matthew Hart. His seven-volume Birds of Australia, from the 1840s, led many to regard him as the father of Australian bird study. He also identified the birds now called Darwin's finches.
