About this artwork

This is plate 10 from Maria Sibylla Merian's Metamorphosis insectorum surinamensium, published in 1705. The book presents the caterpillars and worms of Suriname, along with their transformations, drawn from life. Each one is placed on the plants, flowers and fruits where it was found. The full title also promises frogs, toads, lizards, snakes, spiders and ants, all shown and described life-size, as observed in America. Merian was a naturalist and scientific illustrator who documented insects by watching them directly, and her work showed that insects pass through a life cycle rather than appearing spontaneously.

On your wall: Suits a study, dining room, hallway or reading corner, and sits well with botanical or natural history prints in a calm, considered display.
