This is plate 46 from Maria Sibylla Merian's Metamorphosis insectorum surinamensium, published in 1705. The book presents the caterpillars and worms of Surinam with their changes through life, each placed on the plants, flowers and fruits where it was found. It also shows frogs, toads, lizards, snakes, spiders and ants, all drawn from life in America at life size. Merian was among the earliest European naturalists to record insects by direct observation, and her work showed that insects pass through a life cycle rather than appearing by spontaneous generation. Plants and insects share the page here, as they do throughout the book.
