This is an uncoloured engraved plate from a bound book published in Amsterdam in 1705. It brings together several stages of an insect's life: a moth, a caterpillar and a cocoon, set among a citrus fruit and a flowering branch. The plate is signed by Joseph Mulder as engraver, so the image owes its crisp linework to his hand. Without colour, the eye is drawn to the detail of the leaves, the fruit and the insects. Merian's wider work helped show that insects pass through a life cycle rather than appearing from nowhere, and this plate sits within that tradition of careful observation.
On your wall: Its soft monochrome linework suits studies, hallways, living rooms and reading corners, especially where a quiet botanical note is wanted alongside natural wood or pale walls.

Maria Sibylla Merian was a German-Dutch naturalist, entomologist and scientific illustrator. She was among the first European naturalists to record insects through direct observation. Her work showed that insects pass through a life cycle rather than arising by spontaneous generation. She descended from the Frankfurt branch of the Swiss Merian family.
