This is a colour lithograph by Ernst Haeckel, dated 1904, titled Orchideae. The title points to orchids, and the plate belongs to the series Kunstformen der Natur, in which Haeckel brought together studies of natural forms. The sheet measures 36 by 26 cm, an upright format that suits a flower study. A. Giltsch is named in the title as the person who executed the print. Haeckel was a German zoologist and naturalist as well as an artist, and the botanical subject here sits comfortably alongside his wider interest in the living world.
On your wall: It suits a study, hallway, bedroom or sitting room where a botanical print in an upright format adds quiet interest, particularly alongside other natural-history or floral pieces.
