This engraving by Basilius Besler comes from the Hortus Eystettensis of 1613, published in Nuremberg. It shows three hyacinths, including a double-flowered form, drawn with their bulbs, together with a small spring crocus. Each plant carries its Latin name, in the manner of a botanical reference. This copy has been coloured by hand, so the blooms and foliage have a soft, painterly finish. Besler was a Nuremberg apothecary and botanist, and the work reflects the careful observation that his plant studies are known for.
On your wall: Suits a study, hallway, bedroom or dining room, where its delicate spring flowers and clear botanical detail add quiet interest, especially in calm or traditional interiors.
