About this artwork

This is a leaf from an album of paintings after ancient masters, and the title tells us it shows Laozi riding an ox. It is painted in ink and colour on silk, and it belongs to a double-album by Chen Hongshou that includes landscapes, figures and flowers. Chen's late work is often described as quirky, archaistic and highly refined, yet free of shallowness or sentimentality. The figures and landscapes in these albums are deliberately small in scale, rather like a miniature garden or a carefully chosen table rock, inviting contemplation.

On your wall: Its fine, small-scale ink and colour suits a study, reading corner or quiet hallway, particularly where natural, understated interiors call for something thoughtful.

About Chen Hongshou

Chen Hongshou was a Chinese painter who worked in the late Ming dynasty. His name was once commonly romanised as Ch'en Hung-shou, so you may come across it spelled that way in older writing. Amelia is pleased to offer his work to anyone who enjoys the painting traditions of Ming-era China.
