This is a detail of "Artichoke", an Art Needlework embroidery worked in wool on linen. William Morris designed it in 1877 for Ada Phoebe Godman, and it was later offered through Morris and Company, so others could stitch or own the pattern too. The close view brings the floral, plant-based design and the texture of the woollen stitching into focus. It belongs to the Arts and Crafts movement, in which Morris played such a central part, and shows how he turned a garden plant into a pattern for needlework.
On your wall: Its botanical pattern and textile character suit a sitting room, study or hallway, especially where handcrafted details and a traditional or Arts and Crafts feel are welcome.
