This late 19th-century English textile by William Morris is a large-scale design of exotic flowers on curving stems and leaves. The big flowerheads suggest tree-peonies and lotus, painted in pink, red, yellow and white and defined by brown outlines. Behind them lies a dark greenish-blue ground, worked with a fine, small-scale pattern of scrolling stems, leaves and flowers that fills the whole background. The contrast between bold blooms and delicate detail gives the design both presence and depth. Morris was a leading figure in the British Arts and Crafts movement and helped revive traditional British textile arts.
On your wall: The deep blue-green ground and rich floral colours suit a living room, dining room or bedroom, especially where you want a warm, traditional or botanical feel.
