Basilius Besler, 1613
A double red poppy and a red corn poppy, engraved and coloured by hand, from Basilius Besler's celebrated 1613 garden book.
No VAT charged. Free delivery in Switzerland from CHF 99. Delivery details
This plate comes from the Hortus Eystettensis of 1613, the large botanical work by the Nuremberg apothecary and botanist Basilius Besler. It is an engraved plate, coloured by hand, and it shows a double red poppy alongside a red corn poppy. Latin captions are engraved on the plate itself. The impression comes from the 'Fürstenausgabe', the coloured edition, held in the Eichstätt seminary library, where it appears in the third volume. The plate gives each flower a clear, unhurried portrait.
On your wall: Its red poppies and botanical precision suit a kitchen, dining room, hallway or study, particularly where a touch of colour is welcome against calm, neutral walls.
