This leaf from Fan Qi's album of miscellaneous subjects was painted in ink and colour on silk in China in the early 1650s, during the Qing dynasty. A colophon by Zhou Yi accompanies the image. It describes old trees catching the slanting light of the setting sun, with chilly ravens circling their branches. The leader of the flock judges it a good place to rest as evening brings them home. Zhou Yi calls them filial crows, who feed their young with compassion, and he closes with the wish that people everywhere might be the same, so that fine talent would flourish.
On your wall: Its trees, birds and evening mood suit a study, reading corner or quiet hallway, where a thoughtful, nature-inspired picture can be enjoyed at close range.
