This hand-coloured engraving, Plate 56 from Maria Sibylla Merian's Metamorphosis insectorum surinamensium of 1705, centres on a flowering water hyacinth. A giant water bug flies above it, while below the surface frogs, tadpoles, frog spawn and another water bug share the water. The book's full title promises creatures drawn from life and shown on the plants, flowers and fruits where they were found, and it also mentions the generation of frogs. Merian was a naturalist and scientific illustrator who documented insects by direct observation, and this plate reflects that close attention to living things.
On your wall: Its natural subject and plant-and-water scene suit a study, a reading nook, a kitchen or a calm living room where botanical prints are welcome.

Maria Sibylla Merian was a German-Dutch naturalist, entomologist and scientific illustrator. She was among the first European naturalists to record insects through direct observation. Her work showed that insects pass through a life cycle rather than arising by spontaneous generation. She descended from the Frankfurt branch of the Swiss Merian family.
