About this artwork

Fan Qi painted this leaf in the early 1650s, in ink and colour on silk, as part of an album. It shows a red-leaved maple, a moon, a green rock, pink flowers and several ducks, set within a patterned silk mount. Facing the painting is a colophon in Li Bing's calligraphy. It speaks of maple leaves drifting in the autumn wind, hibiscus flowers and a light evening breeze, and of moonlight falling on dreaming lovers. The verse closes by suggesting that the pair of fowl might dream of partners who are far away.

On your wall: The warm reds, soft pinks and muted greens would suit a study, reading corner, bedroom or calm living room, especially where autumn tones already feature.
