About this artwork

This is plate 40 from Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur, dated 1904, and it is devoted to the Asteridea, or starfish. The plate includes the common starfish, Asterias rubens, along with the stages of a young Asterias: the scaphularia, bipinnaria, brachiolaria and pentapalmar larvae, each shown from different angles. Two further species, Hymenaster echinulatus and Pteraster stellifer, appear too, with views of the mouth region and of the body from above and below. Seeing the animals at so many stages side by side makes the plate a quiet study in how varied one group of sea creatures can be.

On your wall: Its marine subject and carefully ordered arrangement suit a study, hallway or bathroom, and sit comfortably among other natural history prints.
